An avid writer, her interest in the origins of Blacks in Nova Scotia led to producing two booklets, Searching for An Identity (1979) and The Black Loyalists of Little Tracadie (2004).
Her first book of poetry, To My Someday Child, published in 1975, enabled her to hold the distinction of being the first published Black Nova Scotian poet. Her poetry appears in three Canadian anthologies. Her novels include Chasing Freedom (2011), short-listed for the Ann Connor Brimer Award for Young Adult Fiction. If This Is Freedom (2013) was the winner of One Book Nova Scotia in 2016. Her other books include Abigail’s Wish (2016) and Righting Canada’s Wrongs - Africville (2019) . A current novel about a member of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, an all-Black military battalion in the First World War, will be released in the fall of 2019.
